The Moment I Stopped Apologising for Existing

I used to apologise for everything - my thoughts, my feelings, my presence. It became a reflex, a way of shrinking myself to avoid conflict or discomfort. One day, I caught myself apologising for something that didn’t require an apology at all. I paused, mid‑sentence and felt a wave of clarity wash over me. I didn’t owe anyone an apology for simply being myself.

That shift didn’t happen overnight. It came from reclaiming my worth piece by piece. I realised that apologising constantly was a way of telling myself I wasn’t enough. When I stopped, even in small ways, I felt a new sense of confidence grow. I learned that taking up space isn’t arrogance - it’s self‑respect. The more I honoured myself, the less I felt the need to shrink. That moment marked the beginning of a new relationship with myself, one built on acceptance rather than apology.

Do you apologise too often?
