The Weight of Expectations I Never Chose

There was a time when expectations pressed against me like invisible walls. They weren’t mine, yet I carried them as if they were carved into my skin. Expectations about who I should be, how I should behave, what I should accept, what I should do with my lefe. They shaped my world long before I understood I had the right to question them. One day, I realised the weight I was carrying didn’t belong to me - and that truth changed everything. It also was the catalyst for several years of challenges.

Letting go of inherited expectations wasn’t easy. It meant confronting beliefs that had been handed to me as absolutes. It meant acknowledging that the life I was living wasn’t one I had chosen. Releasing those expectations gave me space to breathe, think and rebuild a life that finally felt like my own. I learned that expectations can be both comforting and suffocating - and that the only ones worth carrying are the ones aligned with your truth. The moment I put down what wasn’t mine, I felt lighter, freer and more myself than I had in years.

What expectation have you outgrown?
