The Weight of Telling the Truth

There is a moment every survivor knows: the moment you realise that telling the truth will cost you something. Sometimes it costs relationships. Sometimes it costs comfort. Sometimes it costs the version of yourself you’ve been carrying for years - the one who stayed quiet, stayed small, stayed safe.

Writing Somebody Else’s Life forced me to confront that moment again and again.

For decades, I lived with two versions of myself. There was the woman who built a global career, who travelled, who led teams, who made decisions with confidence and clarity. And then there was the girl who had once been trapped, silenced, and shaped by choices she never made. I kept those two versions separate because it felt easier - safer - to pretend that one had nothing to do with the other.

But the truth is: they were always the same person.

When I finally sat down to write my memoir, I realised how much of my life had been spent carrying a story I never spoke aloud. Trauma doesn’t disappear just because you outrun it. Silence doesn’t heal anything. It simply waits, quietly, until you’re ready to face it.

And when you do, everything shifts.

Writing this book wasn’t just about recounting what happened. It was about reclaiming the narrative - taking back the parts of my life that were stolen, reshaping them, and choosing what they mean to me now. It was about looking at the girl I used to be with compassion instead of shame. It was about acknowledging the strength it took to survive, even when survival didn’t feel like strength at the time.

Most of all, it was about telling the truth - not because it’s easy, but because it’s necessary.

There are girls and women right now living the same reality I escaped. Some are afraid to speak. Some don’t know where to begin. Some believe that silence is the only way to stay safe. I understand that. I lived that. But I also know that truth, when spoken at the right time, can be a lifeline - not just for you, but for someone else who needs to hear it.

This journal will be a place where I explore what it means to live openly after years of silence. A place where I talk about healing, identity, resilience, and the quiet work of rebuilding a life. A place where I honour the girl I used to be, and the woman I’ve become.

If you’re reading this, thank you for being here. Thank you for witnessing this journey. And thank you for allowing me to tell the truth - finally, fully, and without fear.
