The First Time I Felt Truly Seen

It happened unexpectedly - a conversation that began like any other, but shifted into something deeper. There was a moment where someone looked at me, really looked, without judgement or expectation. It was disarming. I felt a softness rise in me that I hadn’t felt in years. Being seen is a rare experience when you’ve spent most of your life trying to blend into the background. That moment stayed with me, not because of what was said, but because of what was understood.

For so long, I had learned to hide parts of myself - the pain, the confusion, the resilience, the truth. I didn’t expect anyone to notice the things I kept buried. But being seen reminded me that connection doesn’t require perfection; it requires honesty. That moment taught me that safe people exist - people who listen without trying to fix, who witness without trying to judge. It was the beginning of learning to trust again, slowly, cautiously, but genuinely. Feeling seen helped me reclaim parts of myself I had forgotten were still there. I slowly started to let people in, created friendships that still exist today. You learn to know who to trust, who to let in and who to keep out.  I have been fortunate that I have been able to find such people everywhere that I have lived. Whilst I do not see them often, they are always there and when we connect it is as if time has not passed.
